A little more about us

Friends of Martin de Porres has been caring for the community of  Barcelona for over 10 years! We run a small nursery school, a small, primitive community centre from premises built out of old shipping containers which have been donated over the years, providing basic education as well as adequate nutrition to 40 children between the ages of 3 and 14 years old. We also run an aftercare facility for children who attend the surrounding schools in the area and assist them with homework and provide them with a meal. For many children in the community, this is the only meal they have for the day.

Every Saturday, we run a soup kitchen from the centre which is attended by over 500 women and children, distributing on average over 1 000 meals per week.

What we do

We Feed , We Teach , We Care!

Improvement

FOMDP assists residents with small cash grants to improve or build homes, to start small businesses and to attend educational courses.

Barcelona

Barcelona is an informal settlement located within the Daveyton Township outside Benoni on the East Rand. The settlement has residents from the neighbouring states but the majority of residents are impoverished South Africans.

Future

FOMDP has attempted to acquire land in the immediate area in order to build a permanent facility.

Assistance

FOMDP commenced its assistance to the community by encouraging donors to adopt families and provide monthly food parcels which are delivered by FOMDP. Currently approximately 250 families are assisted. As a result of interaction with the community FOMDP obtains awareness of people in distress and assists. This assistance includes the provision of food, clothing, blankets and medicine.

L

HIV

There are a large number of HIV positive people residing in the settlement; FOMDP attempts to improve the efficacy of medication for Aids sufferers by improving nutrition. Large volumes of baby formula and meals of ePap are provided regularly (ePap is a vitamin enriched cereal meal). FOMDP assists with Aids awareness programmes and in extreme situations takes terminal cases to hospices.

Operations

FOMDP operates from a site in Durandt Rd (near the water tower) from suitably equipped containers donated by PD NIXON and ROTARY. We operate a soup kitchen every Saturday for 300 people , a medical service providing homeopathic remedies (courtesy of the Sohum Sanctuary) and an after school care service and creche for three days per week for 30 children.
